Welcome to Lapland. You land at Rovaniemi Airport, just above the Arctic Circle, and are driven to your hotel in town, about 20 minutes away. In midwinter it may already be dark when you arrive; the sun barely rises in December. Settle in, change into warm layers and rest for a few hours.
Once it is properly dark, you head straight back out. The first night is deliberately an aurora night: a heated sleigh towed behind a snowmobile carries you about 30 minutes to the top of a fell, well clear of the city glow, where there is nothing to do but watch the sky and wait. On a clear night with good activity, the Northern Lights ripple green across the sky above the snow-covered forest.
At a glance: Time needed: ~3 hrs aurora tour · Travel: ~20 min airport transfer, ~30 min to the fell · Pace: Easy
Schedule
• Arrival: Meet at Rovaniemi Airport and transfer to your hotel, about 20 min.
• Afternoon: Check in (early check-in is not included). Rest and get your warm layers ready.
• Evening: Dinner in town before the tour (own cost).
• Night (around 8:00–9:00 PM): Snowmobile-drawn sleigh aurora hunting tour to a fell top, about 3 hrs in total, with thermal clothing and boots provided.
Travel for the day
• Rovaniemi Airport → hotel ~20 min by private transfer.
• Hotel → fell ~30 min by heated sleigh behind a snowmobile, and back.
Tips & what to carry
• The Northern Lights depend on clear skies and solar activity; sightings cannot be guaranteed. Lapland's aurora season runs roughly from late August to early April.
• Wear thermal base layers under the overalls provided, plus woollen socks, a hat and gloves.
• Phone batteries drain fast in the cold; keep them in an inside pocket and carry a power bank.
• For aurora photos, use your phone's night mode or a tripod with a long exposure.

After breakfast you meet the huskies, who will already be howling with excitement when you arrive. You ride in a traditional sleigh as the team pulls you through the snowy forest on a 20 or 30-minute safari from Rovaniemi, with a stop for photos along the way. Afterwards you warm up with a hot drink and cookies before returning to the hotel.
Rest in the afternoon, because the evening is another aurora night. The Northern Lights chase tour goes wherever the sky looks clearest, visiting remote viewpoints away from the lights of town. You wait by a traditional fire with complimentary snacks, and the guides keep watch on the forecasts and the horizon to give you the best chance of seeing the aurora borealis.

• Sit in the sleigh for photos; standing is not allowed while moving.
• Take an afternoon nap; aurora chases can run past midnight.

After breakfast you are picked up at 10:00 AM for a guided tour of Santa Claus Village, about 15 minutes north of Rovaniemi on the Arctic Circle. The highlight for most families is meeting Santa Claus himself in his office, a warm, unhurried visit that even adults enjoy.
You also visit Santa's main post office, where letters arrive from all over the world and you can send a card home with a special Arctic Circle postmark, and cross the white line that marks the Arctic Circle. There is time for lunch and to browse the shops for Lapland crafts and souvenirs before you return to Rovaniemi. The tour lasts about four to five hours.

The walk starts with the birds, including owls and eagles, and then moves on to the polar animals: the polar bears are the star attraction, alongside brown bears, wolverines, lynx, moose, reindeer and Arctic foxes. Afterwards you have lunch of traditional Lapland food, and there is a stop at the Fazer chocolate shop to buy local sweets. The tour takes about five to six hours before you return to Rovaniemi.

After breakfast you check out of your Rovaniemi hotel and take the shuttle bus arranged by the resort from the city centre to your glass igloo, about 45 minutes away. The rest of the day is yours to settle in and enjoy the quiet of the forest.
The igloos have glass roofs, so you can lie in a warm bed and watch the sky for the Northern Lights, often with the snow-covered trees as the only frame. On a clear night it is one of the most special ways to see the aurora, without stepping outside in the cold. Glass igloo houses are in high demand and subject to availability, and prices vary by season, so please confirm details with your consultant.

Tips & what to carry

• Glass roofs can frost or get covered in snow; the heating usually keeps them clear, but sightings are never guaranteed.
